As Mahakala He is the death and the destroyer. The entire tantra originated from Lord Shiva. To attain various siddhis and objectives He gave 64 yantras and their mantras to the world. As Nataraja He is the presiding deity of dance and music. He is the Male force in the Kundalini. Hanuman and Bhairava are two of His famous avataras. His consort Devi is the Feminine Mother force of the universe. His son Ganesha is remover of all obstacles and the ruler of all Vidyas. The two most holy rivers of India - Ganga and Narmada are associated with Him. He is the presiding deity of the Holy Himalayas and His consort Devi is the presiding deity of the Vindhyachala. Of the nine planets in Vedic astrology seven have the Shiva family as their ruling deities as follows:

It is performed for the term Navagraha denotes the nine celestial bodies which are central to astrological calculations (and beliefs) (and not the nine planets as it is frequently erroneously translated). The sun, the moon, mars, mercury, jupiter, venus, saturn and the two shadow planets Rahu and Ketu constitute the Navagrahas.
